If you work for the VA, protect yourself
- Never use a VA computer, phone, email account, or network to contact a journalist. Use a personal device on your own home or cellular connection.
- Don’t send patient names or other protected health information. Describe what happened, and we’ll work out together what can be documented safely.
- Tell me up front if you need to stay anonymous. I won’t publish your name without your permission.
- Federal employees have whistleblower protections. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel and the VA Office of Inspector General hotline are separate, official channels that you can use instead of, or as well as, contacting the press.
